Senior Mission Leaders (SML)

The course for UN senior mission leaders (UN SML) aims to prepare potential future mission leaders for leadership roles and responsibilities in United Nations peacekeeping operations. The course enables member state officials who cover peacekeeping issues to better understand how multidimensional United Nations peacekeeping missions operate. Participants will also gain a wider understanding of the UN as a whole. The course will appeal to recently appointed or future leaders in UN peacekeeping operations. Gender balance among participants is encouraged.

UN Humanitarian Civil-Military Coordination Course

To improve the effectiveness of international relief operations and promote effective humanitarian-military relationships by raising mutual awareness and understanding of the roles of military and humanitarian actors in emergencies. The main objective of this course is to create awareness and understanding among participants on the basic concepts and principles of Humanitarian Civil-Military Coordination (UN-CMCoord). The following are the specific objectives of the course:

  • To understand the roles and responsibilities of states, humanitarian and military organizations in international relief response;
  • To understand humanitarian response and coordination mechanisms including the particular role of OCHA;
  • To analyze and apply the guidelines for the use of military and civil defence assets in humanitarian emergencies, including underlying concepts and principles;
  • To define the roles and responsibilities of the UN humanitarian civil-military coordination officer;
  • To join a global humanitarian civil-military coordination network and to encourage professional development in the area; and,
  • To be aware of regional humanitarian civil-military coordination issues

UN Civil-Military Coordination Field Course

To train experienced humanitarian personnel and potential CMCoord Officers to fulfil UN-CMCoord responsibilities in ongoing and/or future emergencies, in order to contribute to improving the effectiveness of international relief operations by promoting appropriate and effective humanitarian civil-military relationships.

  • Understand the various civ-mil guidelines and policies and their implications on the UN-CMCoord function

UN Civil-Military Coordination Familiarisation Course

The United Nations Humanitarian Civil-Military Coordination (UNCMCoord) Familiarisation Course is designed for key government officials and staff of international humanitarian rganizations,including the Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement (ICRC, IFRC and National Societies). This also includes officials from the National Disaster Management Organisations (NDMOs), defense establishments, foreign affairs, armed forces and other civilian agencies who are principally responsible for emergency response planning, policy formulation and operations doctrine development in emergency response operations. The module will be facilitated by staff from the Civil Military Coordination Section (CMCS) in OCHA Geneva and the relevant OCHA Regional and/or Country Office. Sessions will be conducted in English. If and when required, simultaneous translation can be arranged by the requesting agency.
